Solid Wood or Veneer — What’s the Real Difference
Let’s start with a surprise: quality veneer isn’t a compromise. A layer of real wood over a stable board resists warping better than a wide solid wood panel, which is why large cabinet doors are almost always veneered — even on the world’s priciest furniture.
So when do you want solid wood? Anywhere that takes knocks and wear: tabletops, load-bearing shelves, legs. That’s where the ability to sand and refresh is worth its weight in gold.
What is worth checking: the thickness of the veneer (0.6 mm and up), and whether the core is quality MDF or cheap particleboard. You can feel the difference in the weight — pick the piece up.
